Once again, The Honourable Miss Phryne Fisher finds herself knee-deep in mystery! Waking up unusually early one morning, Phryne has a rare period of free time ahead of her. She drops her daughters off for a school charity event at the Blind Institute before visiting a university professor she had met during a previous case and admired. The infatuated professor then invites Phryne to dine at his home in Williamstown later that week.
During a lovely dinner with her new friend Jeoffrey, Phryne makes two unsettling discoveries: first, an abandoned opium pipe in the park, and later the body of a Chinese man on the beach, the cause of death initially unclear but ultimately deemed a homicide. Soon after, the teenage sister-in-law of Phryne's long-time lover Lin Chung goes missing from her residence. When one of Jeoffrey's colleagues is murdered at a Chinese-themed party he is hosting, in front of a group of guests, Phryne begins to wonder if all these events are connected in some way. Furthermore, mysterious notes warning her to "REPENT" and that "THE WAGES OF SIN IS DEATH" are found in her letterbox.
Alongside the sophisticated and stylish Phryne, this intriguing mystery showcases Phryne's three wards, each with their own mysteries to solve: Ruth and Jane investigate an embezzler at the Institute, while Tinker assists Phryne in identifying the sender of the threatening messages.
